Wine and Dine Your Date on a Dime

In this tough economy, even your love life can take a hit. Dating can be expensive--dinner and a movie can cost you a pretty penny. Don't despair! Here are some date-perfect activities that will impress your sweetie, without leaving you looking like a cheapskate.

Dinner and a movie. Paying for two movie tickets isn't terribly expensive. But add popcorn, candy, and sodas, and you're looking at a pretty hefty bill. Not to mention, you'll probably want to feed your sweetie before the movie. You can still offer dinner and a movie; it just won't involve the huge screen, surround sound, and overpriced popcorn. Save your dough and enjoy dinner and the movie at home. Surprise your honey with your cooking prowess by presenting him or her with a home cooked meal. After dinner (by candlelight if you're a real romantic), pop in a DVD of a favorite movie classic or a foreign film you won't find at the theater. Snuggling on the sofa with your sweetie is much more romantic (and less expensive) than watching a movie with the chatter of a peanut gallery.

Art crawls. Many cities offer art nights during which local galleries and museums open their doors to the public. Often called First Fridays (or Second/Third/Fourth Fridays), these events are kind of like a pub crawl, except with art and without the inebriation. Many of these art galleries even offer free wine and hors d'oeuvres. Unusual works of art may spark great conversation (or even laughs). Art crawls are a great way to get to know your date, his or her dislikes and preferences. And best of all, it's free!

Long walks. Take advantage of romantic scenery in the great outdoors. Take your date on a hiking excursion. The view and fresh air are free! Getting your blood pumping during a hike is a fine way to get close to your date. Imagine holding your honey's hand as you scale rough terrain. Your date will surely appreciate your physical prowess. Better yet, pack a few snacks and drink and you've made a day of it. Your date and your wallet will thank you.

Don't let the economy cramp your dating style. You may not be able to afford restaurant reservations or movie premieres, but you can still wine and dine your date without breaking the bank. The important thing is to spend quality time with your sweetie -- something that shouldn't have to cost you a pretty penny.
