What is the Best Time of the Week to Find Cheap Flights?

Traveling is not cheap, especially when you are traveling by air, but there are cheap flights out there if you know where to look for them and are persistent enough to find them. Finding an affordable way to travel by air for your next vacation or business trip can give you more money to spend once you get on the ground, and if you are flying the entire family off somewhere on a trip - looking for the cheapest fares becomes even more important. There are specific times during the week that you can save on flights to nearly any destination, including some of the most popular vacation spots in the U.S. and around the world. For the most part, flying during the week costs much less than flying on Friday evening, Saturday, or Sunday night because this is the busiest time of the week for most airlines and most routes are filled with vacationers just like you - looking to head out after work on Friday night and return on Sunday night in order to get back to work on Monday. For popular business destinations, however, like New York or Washington, D.C., you might find that flights are cheapest on the weekends because of the number of business people traveling during the week.

If you have an option to fly during the week, you can usually save money - and there are an abundance of flights available for you to choose from. Weekday flights from Monday morning through Thursday evening are the cheapest, especially flights on Tuesday and Wednesday as there are fewer people looking to fly during these times and the airlines find it harder to fill their flights - so they offer deep discounts. If you can plan your vacation to begin on a weekday instead of on Friday, you will find that a cheap flight is more readily available. If possible, work with your employer in order to begin your vacation time on a day of the week that will allow you to start and end your vacation when ticket prices are more economical, such as departing on a Monday evening and returning on a Monday morning.

As an added plus to traveling during the week, you'll also find that airline terminals are very much less congested than on the weekends, which makes it easier to check your bags and find your gate without fighting the crowds. You won't see lines that are as long to check in and pass through security check points, and the people that are there seem to move fairly quickly through various check stations so that you don't have to arrive as early to catch a weekday flight. That's a bit less stress for you when you depart, and if you're returning on a weekday, the same holds true. Everything just moves more quickly.

Even if you're flying out during the week, you should still do a comparison of ticket prices for your cheap flight. There are fewer flights during the week, so you will have fewer options - and you might find that being flexible with departures and return times can save you even more. For instance, if flying out a few hours earlier or later than anticipated is an option for you, then you'll often find that you can save a significant amount of money by taking a different flight, or a different airline. Doing a bit of research can help you save hundreds of dollars on the cost of your seat.
