1969: Soyuz 5 (USSR)

Soyuz 5 was a Soyuz spacecraft launched by the Soviet Union on 15 January 1969 Soyuz 4 docked in orbit. Soyuz 5 was controlled by Boris Volynov commander and flight engineers carried out Alexei Yeliseyev and Yevgeni Khrunov as crew on the Soyuz 4 transfer for reentry vehicles. The flight led to scientific, technical and medical-biological research, examination and testing of vehicle systems and design elements of space craft, docking of manned spacecraft and the construction of an experimentalSpace station, transfer of cosmonauts from one craft to another in orbit. Volynov remained on the Soyuz 5, and returned to earth in a truly remarkable re-entry. The service module of the Soyuz rocket to brake not separate, but from that point it was too late to cancel. While this had taken place at various Vostok and Voskhod flights, it was a much more serious problem for Volynov, where the Soyuz service module was much larger than the small pack those other retro vehicles used. WhenThe Soyuz launch aerobraking in the upper layers of the atmosphere, the combined probe sought the aerodynamically stable position - nose forward, to protect the heavy descent module with a view directly into the air stream with its light metal entry hatch at the front. The gaskets sealing the hatch began to burn, the air filled with dangerous fumes. The delay, during normal re-entry vehicles, Volynov pulled out against his harness, instead of against the padded...
