Getting to the Must-See Places in Australia on a Shoestring Budget

Australia has many must-see places, so why not make use of the time that you study in Australia to see more of this vast country?

Must See Places in Australia

Australia is an incredibly large and diverse country and while it's impossible to have a definitive and exhaustive list, these are just some of the more famous places that millions of tourists love to visit every year.

  • The Great Barrier Reef, Queensland -- the largest coral reef system in the world, is one of the seven wonders of the world.
  • Gold Coast, Queensland - a stepping stone away from rainforests and idyllic islands, the Gold Coast is a modern city with amazing beaches and canals.
  • Sydney Harbour, New South Wales - the most spectacular location for a city with the famous Oprah House and Harbour Bridge. Sydney has been built around a sparkling harbour which is filled with small coves and famous beaches like Bondi, Coogee, and Manly.
  • Blue Mountains - only a short drive away from Sydney and filled with magnificent sights.
  • Uluru, the Northern Territory - Ayers Rock is the world's largest monolith and a sacred aboriginal site. It is 9.4 kilometres in circumference, which means the average person one and a half hours to completely walk around it.
  • The Great Ocean Road, Victoria - known as one of the most scenic drives on earth, this 250 km road is only one hour's drive from Melbourne and passes through Apollo Bay, Port Fairy, the Otway National Park, and Campbell National Park with the Twelve Apostles, a collection of famous rocks jutting out of the sea.
  • Philip Island, Victoria - see the penguin parade and enjoy the great surfing, snorkelling and diving opportunities in this region.
  • The Kimberley Region, Western Australia - located in the northern part of Western Australia, the Kimberley region has a tropical climate with stunning landscapes. For an outback adventure, you can take cruises around the waterfalls, cliffs, numerous rivers and rainforests.
  • The Snowy Mountains - the tallest mountain in Australia is Mount Kosciuszko. Great terrain for skiing in winter and beautiful sights in the other seasons.
Travelling Cheap

Getting to the Must-See Places in Australia on a Shoestring Budget

1. Take a Cheap Flight

Australia has quite a few discount airlines offering very cheap interstate flights. While many Australian universities will have on-campus travel agencies, you can try signing up with travel agencies on the internet for alerts and book online as soon as you receive them.

2. Take a Train Ride

If you're not in a hurry, you can take an overnight train ride. Different rail companies provide services that run between specific cities or towns, and fares can be significantly cheaper than air tickets, especially if you're in economy class. Compared with a Melbourne to Sydney flight of one hour, an equivalent train journey will take around 12 hours.

3. Car Pool with Friends for a Road Trip

Car pooling is another great way of travelling interstate. Rent a car with friends and take a turn driving while you split the costs of petrol.

4. Interstate Buses

A number of companies run interstate bus routes. Australia is a large country, so like train trips, buses trips will take much longer than air travel, but are very cheap and convenient.

5. Take Your Bike

If you rent a car, it's easy to take your bikes with you. All you need is to fit a bike rack or rent a car with an existing rack and you'll be able to bike around instead of paying for transport once you hit your destination. Biking is also one of the best ways to actually connect with the physical environment.

6. Stay at Friends' Houses or Share Accommodation

Never pay for accommodation if you don't have to. If you must, travel with more people to split accommodation costs, use online comparison sites, and sign up online for discount hostel alerts.

7. Airport Shuttles

If you're flying, use the airport shuttle buses and trains. Most capitals have very cheap airport shuttle services that allow you to book online, so that once you arrive, you can quickly get to the city centre, and then on to your next destination.

Entry from: Purnululu National Park, Australia Entry Title: "Bumbling around and above the Bungles" Entry: "Before we begin, we would like to say "thank you" to all those people who have let us know that they have enjoyed our blog. We love reading your comments and, yes, there has been an hiatus -- but that's all to do with us travelling remotely and having lots of wonderful experiences, just so we have something to blog about (!). So, on to the bit where we brag about our next fabulous, jealousy-inducing adventure; where we tell you all about our double dose of the Purnululu National Park -- by both air and ground [or flying and feeting, as we nicknamed it!] For Immi's 12th birthday treat, we bought tickets to fly over the Bungle Bungle Ranges. A change to the overall plan meant that the helicopter flight had to be replaced by a fixed-wing plane (helicopters only take three passengers and, hey ... there are four of us!). We were collected at the ridiculously early time of 5.15am and driven to the airport for a 6am flight. There were several reasons for taking the early flight -- better photographic light over the ranges, less thermal activity resulting in a smoother flight, and the early hour reduced the chance of motion sickness [some parts of the body were still asleep!]. Our flight left from Kununurra ...

"Day 89 - Sydney" Al_fey's photos around Sydney, Australia

Preview of Al_fey's blog at TravelPod. Read the full blog here: www.travelpod.com This blog preview was made by TravelPod using the TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow creator. Entry from: Sydney, Australia Entry Title: "Day 89 - Sydney" Entry: "Today was our last full day in Sydney, and we realised that we'd be quite sad to move on. Although we've not had great weather here, and we haven't really explored all there is to see in the city, we've had a really good and relaxed time here, and of course Eric is the main reason for that. He's been the perfect host! We had a few things to organise today, first on the list was to get our round-the-world paper airline tickets updated & re-printed. Yet again this was a very frustrating experience, but the lady who eventually helped us in the Qantas office was fantastic. She seemed to know a hell of a lot more than most of the other muppets we've been dealing with so far over the phone, so it was refreshing to be able to talk through all our issues with her. We'd intended to re-route our flights leaving Oz, from Christchurch to Auckland (so that we can work our way down NZ from north to south, and spend Xmas with my little sister Bex in Christchurch), but after a long and complicated discussion the Qantas lady helped us realise it was best to keep our flights as they are, and to get a separate flight up to Auckland instead. We quickly shot out to an internet cafe to see if we could get a better price than the A$95 that she was quoting ...

International and domestic flights in Australia: Qantas and Virgin Blue

It may be quite expensive to book an international and domestic trip to Australia. With Qantas and Virgin Blue, you can get air flights at discounted rates.

Australia is a country diverse in natural wonders, from its large barrier reefs, considered the largest in the world, up to its swaths of rainforests, estimated as 16 times older than the popular Amazon. Aside from this, you will awe at the tropical "Top End" up to the red-sanded, semi-arid Outback.

In winter, you can go to the famous Red Center. You can also circumnavigate to the massive, gorgeous big rock or Uluru. In peak seasons, especially in the famous Red Center, Kakadu and Darwin are the best areas to visit. Kakadu is considered as the biggest national park of Australia. Although the dry season here is good for bushwalking, it is not ideal to join a helicopter tour in this season.

Going to Australia can be costly for those who are from North America and Europe. An average round trip flight from Los Angeles to Sydney costs US $1,500 during the months of October to February and the summer season.
If you will go in the spring and winter seasons of June to September, you will be able to save US $800. In fact, by taking the national airline of Australia, Qantas, you can get round trip airfare for only US $750, Los Angeles to Sydney routes.

There are only 3 carriers that cover the US-Australia route, namely; United, Air New Zealand and Qantas. With only three choices, booking a flight is quite difficult. Qantas is the most recommended with their commendable service and good airplane food. They are partners with American Airlines, and they give discounted rates.

With the Australian government focusing on their tourism industry, they offer a wide array of packages that start at $1,300, inclusive of lodging, international fare and domestic flights. Qantas not only guarantees reasonable and attractively priced solutions for domestic traveling like the Boomerang Pass, you can also get a reduced domestic flight ticket when you purchase an international ticket at the same time.

The computation is divided into 1 among the 3 zones. Every zone is dictated by the set mileage being flown. Zone 1 extending 750 miles is $160 AU. Zone 3 goes for about 1,151 or more miles for only $360 AU. This even includes several Aussie cities, 5 of New Zealand's gateway cities, some islands in the South Pacific. It is very important that you initially buy the pass in the US, enabling you to purchase more tickets with a similar rate when you are in the country.

As for the market of domestic flights, you can choose from 2 low fare airlines, namely; JetStar and Virgin Blue. Competitively, Virgin Blue can offer you more options. This would include one-way flights for only $129 AU, Sydney-Alice Springs, and $149 AU, Darwin and Cairns. Apart from routes to Australia vast expanse, Virgin Blue also offers no-frill Flights to New Zealand and Tasmania.

With Jetstar, Qantas' low-cost branch, you may have problems because their paths to focus primarily on the cities along the southern and eastern coasts, and Tasmania. Air fare is only $ 79 AU, Sydney-Sunshine Coast (north of Brisbane), AU $ 65, Sydney, Melbourne, AU and $ 95 for Sydney to Hobart city in southern Tasmania.
Fight with JetStar to develop his system, can lead to price wars with Virgin Blue.Domestic flights may increase because of the competition.
